I swear I think schools operate in a CYA mode all the time. It is the most annoying and frustrating experience. Yesterday, I am sorry to say, I was most unpleasant with Assistant Principal at my son’s school. However, when I reflect, I think while she may not have deserved it, it really was a reflection of my growing disappointment with them.
My son’s class is going on a field trip to the Aquarium. His classroom teacher asked me whether I or my nanny would chaperone the trip because she thinks he may do well with some extra support. So I asked her whether that was her indirect way of telling me that if someone did not attend with him, that he would not be allowed to go on the trip…and boy did she start to dance. Well I’ve not time for dancing at 2:45pm when I am standing at the school door to pick him up so I just walked away.
Upon reflection I thought: a) my son has already been to the Aquarium 2 times, I am not taking the day off from work just to go with him and a bunch of other kids again, and c) I was fine with him not going provided she was honest with him and told him the truth…that she didn’t want him to go because she was afraid he wouldn’t manage his own behavior. So that was the email I sent her on Tuesday afternoon…
Now Wednesday the school’s Assistant Principal called me while I am at work, wanting to discuss this very same issue because apparently, the classroom teacher brought it up with her…so my very annoyed and frustrated response was this:
A) I already sent a follow up email to the classroom teacher about this issue so I don’t understand why she felt the need to have you call me?
B) Oh, you weren’t aware that I sent her an email on this…perhaps you should go back to the classroom teacher and read the note I sent her yesterday.
C) Is there some pressing emergency going on with my son?
D) Goodbye…and I hung up.
Like don’t you people have more important thing to focus on…let me give you an idea…EDUCATION!
